Quick Facts – Ontario Water Works Association

• The Ontario Water Works Association – A Section of AWWA (OWWA) is dedicated to the promotion of public health and welfare in the provision of drinking water of unquestionable quality and sufficient quantity. AWWA (American Water Works Association) was founded in 1881 and is located in Denver, Colorado, with over 57,000 members in 130 countries.

• OWWA is a not-for-profit membership organization that is the voice of drinking water professionals in Ontario. It strives to be the leading force in the Province of Ontario dedicated to safe drinking water by advancing the technology, science, management and government policies relative to the stewardship of water.

• OWWA has more than 1100 members representing research scientists, engineers, chemists, hydrogeologists, and managers and technicians employed by Ontario’s municipal water systems.

• OWWA has over 20 committees dedicated to providing education, information, advocacy and leadership in water stewardship to its members, the public and government at all levels.

• OWWA believes in achieving consumer confidence and satisfaction through on-going public involvement in planning, policy development, regulatory and quality issues regarding drinking water.

• OWWA was a “Party with Standing” in Phase II, along with OMWA (Ontario Municipal Water Association). A special joint Committee of OWWA and OMWA was formed to review and provide a number of water profession experts to act as a resource. Ten papers were produced, public hearings were testified at and two papers were specially commissioned by the Ministry of the Attorney General for presentation to Justice O’Connor. • OWWA is a proud supporter of Water for People-Canada, an independent funding and information resource that assists developing countries throughout the world by organization and implementing drinking water and sanitation projects that improve the health and welfare of local, regional and national populations.
